Alabama Department of Mental Health
The ECCHCO Project
The Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation proposes to develop an East Central Children’s Health Collaborative (ECCHCO) Project. The goal of ECCHCO is to develop a collaborative, community-based system of care responsive to the mental health needs of children and youth with a serious mental health needs and their families in a three-county rural area of Alabama. The ECCHCO Project will address the comprehensive needs of children and adolescents with SED and their families by creating a family-focused and youth-centered system of care that transcends traditional mental health boundaries by integrating social service, education, and juvenile justice resources with mental health services for these children in a community-based outreach setting. The three-county rural area identified through this application represents some of the poorest counties in Alabama and oftentimes the United States. ECCHCO will address the tremendous barriers facing poor people in receiving and maintaining appropriate and comprehensive care by creating a system of care that is outreach-based and incorporates culturally competent practices into service delivery. The three-county target area includes: Pike County (City of Troy, City of Brundidge), Macon County, and Bullock County. Partners include child-welfare, juvenile justice, education, primary health care, child advocacy, and Troy University.

Connecting
I just received the e-mail in regards to this program. I am really interested in providing our community with an awareness day event. I would like to receive the material needed in order to bring this to the City of Merced in the year 2010. At this time our department will begin the program within our local community events and holiday community events. I plan on presenting this to the community of Merced at our annual 5 de mayo event on Wednesday, May 5th 2010. Thursday, May 6th we will present it to our youth centers that provide service to youth K-8th grade. I will attempt to partner with First 5 of Merced County, Building Healthy Communities Organization, and the Mental Health Department in Merced County. I plan to provide older youth (high school, college or university volunteers)share poems, songs, personal stories or drawings that reflect their emotions and feelings in different stages in their life as well as sharing how they connect with their inner most feelings and thoughts to place them on paper. The youth centers will be provided with youth activities (i.e. Bounce houses, face painting, board games, etc.), activities that twill help promote self-esteem, build character and help students recognize their assets through assets building activities (40 developmental assets and Character Counts) and develop recreational skills, through the use of a program developed at California State University San Diego SPARK (Sports Play Active Recreation for Kids). If partnership is created this year then the agencies will be provided with an opportunity to create mini workshops for parents to understand and improve their communication with their children and help their children cope with emotional, personal, social and family distress. As well as workshops for the youth to learn how to communicate with their parents or other adults that can help them make appropriate decisions based on current, past and future situations. If this project opportunity isn’t possible this year, I would love to be provided with material, information, and support for next year’s awareness day. Please contact me in regards to the support that can be provided to help make Awareness Day 2010 happen in the City of Merced. Art on Emotion Workshops are being offered to various youth groups through out the community. Each piece of art will be accompanied by a narrative on the feeling being expressed. All participants engage in a discussion on healthy coping skills and the connection between physical and mental health. All art will be included in an exhibit at the Somerville Museum in Sept. 2010. During the exhibit there will be discussions and workshops offered free to the community with a focus of reducing stigma and strategies to promote positive mental health.

Dayspring Programs, Inc.
The Children of Dayspring
Dayspring Programs, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 organization committed to improving the quality of life for children and families affected by substance abuse, homelessness, and poverty. We are located in Baltimore, Maryland and currently operate two housing programs--Transitional, which provides housing and supportive programs to 18 mothers and children for a period of 12-18 months. The second housing program, Shelter Plus Care, provides long-term housing and supportive programs to 63 families affected by substance abuse and homelessness. Our goals for participation in National Children's Mental Health Day is to increase the awareness among our families about the importance of child mental health. We are encouraging our parents to commit to developing and nurturing the mental health of children and will be having various activities such as "A Letter to My Children" and "My Committment to My Child" so that parents express their feelings to their children. We are hosting an event on Thursday, May 6, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at the Hattie Harrison Community Center. We are pleased to have as our speaker, Ms. MeShelle Foreman-Shields, who is an actress, comedian, and motivational speaker. Our children, who range in age from less than one year to adolescence will have their artwork displayed at this event. Infants have made "trees" in which their mental health was the root and their hands are the branches and leaves. Our preschool and primary age children are engaging in a project entitled, "My Feelings are a Work of Art" where they artistically describe what makes them happy and sad. Our middle and high school age children are working on an art project entitled "When I Grow Up" and will also be sharing their aspirations at this event. We plan on reporting our success to our local politicians and in furture funding opportunities. We are very exicited about participating in this event and look forward to honoring and celebrating the mental health of children who have been affected by substance abuse.

How Am I Feeling Today?
Our program serves children from ages of six weeks through five years. We are in the beginning stages of helping children learn to become emotionally literate. The children will paint their feelings and have groups discussion during their circle time with their peers and teachers. We also are encouraging a home activity which is the "Feelings Cube" activity. The parents can create a cube out of a milk carton or paper and draw a face on each side displaying a different emotion. The family then sits around the table or in a cirlce on the floor and takes turns rolling the Feelings Cube. Whichever feeling lands face up, the person then describes an event that evoked that particular feeling. This will lead to a family discussion on feelings, provide family bonding and encourage emotional literacy.

Harrisburg PreK Program / PA PreK Counts
Harrisburg PreK Program is collaboration between Harrisburg School District (funded by PA PreK counts) and Capital Area Head Start. We provide PreK services to 608 3and 4 year old children in 38 classrooms across the Harrisburg catchment area. The goal of this partnership is to use developmentally appropriate methods to provide early learning experiences that will increase school readiness and prepare the children for academic and social success. In addition to academic programs, we use a High Scope curriculum and an embedded, research based social emotional curriculum (PATHS) that teach children to respect their classroom community and their peers, identify and express emotions, and find appropriate solutions to their problems. All activities within the classroom are aligned with PA early learning standards. In the weeks leading up to Mental Health Awareness Day, the parents will participate in a series of facilitated group discussions to increase understanding and provide ways to support their children’s Social/ Emotional development and address discrepancies in this area. On Mental Health Awareness day, we will invite parents, community members, and local providers into the school buildings to view the children's work and participate in a S/E lesson. In 1 or 2 of the larger buildings, local child mental health and family services providers will be invited to display and provide information on services available through their agencies. My hope is that the day’s events will increase an understanding of the importance and the challenges of addressing Early Childhood Mental Health and an understanding of how to access services in our community.

Open House Art Expo @ Roxborough high School
I recently became aware of this day and immediately spoke to my colleagues about this event and decided to keep it simple since we didn't have much time.We plan to have a school wide program where everyone who wants to participate may enter a work of art for our Open House Art Expo at Roxborough High School in Philadelphia, Pa. On May 6, 2010, we plan to invite our parents and the community businesses and agencies in for an Art Expo show casing our students art “My Feelings Are a Work of Art.” Students will be able to work with art teachers and other staff at school to create works of art for an Art Exhibit at our school. An invitation will be sent parents, community businesses, health agencies, and recreation centers to attend our Open House Art Expo celebrating “Mental Health Awareness Day.” Bridging the gap between Communities, Schools, and Family Partnerships; with this method we can help promote positive youth development, engage families, establish community partnerships, and raise mental health awareness. Our goal is to make parents, grandparents and guardians aware of their youth’s feelings and how the behavior of their parents and guardians influence their feelings, behavior and their ability to learn in and out of school. In addition our goal is to provide information on the signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety, etc in children and youth. Provide information to local resources to assist youth and families to help build a “System of Care.” Finally, our school has had a turbulent year so this is our opportunity to reveal, revive, rejuvenate and encourage ourselves so that we can heal.

My Feelings are a Work of Art
The board of the Delaware Valley Art Therapy Association will invite our membership to join us in volunteering our time on May 6, 2010 at The Please Touch Museum, Philadelphia, PA. In keeping with AATA's theme, 'my feelings are a work of art', The DVATA will have tables set up all day for vistors to the museum. Children will be given a piece of paper with a pre-drawn frame and instructed "Your feelings are a work of art, draw your feelings". All children that visit the museum are accompied by an adult so when they complete their drawing we will encourage communication of feelings between child and adult. We expect to see 500 - 1,000 children on this day! We will also provide a list of mental health and art therapy services in the area for children as a resource for any adult that is interested in more information. We will use our newsletter and website, www.dvata.org, to report this event.

Music and Art ABC's
Corinne Greskiewicz
Music and Art ABC’s will be participating in this year’s National Children’s Mental Health Awareness - Art Action Day to be held on Thursday, May 6, 2010. We will be opening up our studio from 10am to 11:30am and from 3:15 to 4:45pm and inviting children (with their caregivers) from our community to create art and discuss feelings. Our masters-level Art Therapist and Art Teacher, Corinne, will lead the children in a discussion about feelings using famous works of art. Children will then have a chance to make their own art using paint, oil pastels and collage materials to explore feelings of happy, sad, scared and mad. The discussion and art task will be tailored to the age of children present. Information regarding children’s creative, social and emotional development will be shared with their caregivers during the event. The goals of this event are: -to encourage children to identify, explore and discuss feelings -to provide the children with language to help explain feelings -to encourage the use of art to promote social and emotional development -to help bring about awareness of children’s mental health in our community -to make the community and caregivers aware of the value of children’s involvement in art-making and the value of artistic expression in general This event will be advertised on our website, MusicandArtABCs.com, at Taylor’s Music Store in downtown West Chester, PA, and with regional, family-oriented newspapers and online resources. "Piecing it Together"
Our goal is to use art as a means of helping elementary, school aged children to express their individual post Hurricane Ike feelings that may be too big for words. On September 12, 2008, Hurricane Ike barreled through Galveston County causing community wide destruction and devastation. Over a year later, people remain displaced, living in FEMA trailers, their lives, along with the landscape, foever altered. Our Mental Health clinic located in Galveston County, one of the hardest hit areas, serves familes and children who are still "piecing their lives together" post Hurricane Ike. We intend to reach out to the children in our service area through our clinic and possibly schools, allowing them to participate in the creative, ancient, healing art of tile mosaics. We will create mosaic stepping stones, representative of the rebuilding process, restoring mental health one piece at a time, and moving forward through the healing process, one step at a time. Photos will be taken of the process and the completed art works and displayed in our clinic and the community on a "Wall of Fame!"

Art is real when it heals.
The Vermont Art Therapy Association (ATAV) will be partnering with the Burlington Boys and Girls Club and the Integrated Arts Academy (IAA) magnet school in Burlington Vermont to provide children in grades K - 2 with art experiences that will increase the child's understanding of the mind and body connection, and how feelings can impact their bodies utilizing the theme "my feelings are a work of art". Specific art activities will be provided to groups of children working with art therapists who are members of the ATAV, after school at the IAA on May 6th in recognition of Children's Mental Health Awareness Day. The "art action" oriented activities will be filmed and the participants will have an opportunity to present the art work they complete, and describe their understanding of how feelings can be expressed by the body and how art can heal, in the film. The film will then be put onto DVDs and distributed to the local school districts and other agencies and programs serving young children in the community for viewing. The participants will each receive a DVD to keep. The necessary releases for the children to participate, and to have themselves and their work filmed will be obtained in advance. The art activities will increase the participants understanding of the relationship between their bodies and their feelings, while also offering them the opportunity to experience the relief that art making can bring, and increase the possibility that they will utilize art making in the future to manage their feelings. The film will also increase the young children's self esteem and sense of mastery with an opportunity to view them in a positive and pro-active activity knowing that the film will be promoted in the local community, enhancing their feelings of connection, permancy and empowerment. The film will communicate to other children, agencies, schools, providers, the community and care givers; the power that art can provide to help children heal and grow via the art activities the children are engaged in, in addition to the film itself which is "art in action". Sometime after May 6th and before June, the film will be presented to the local community at the IAA and there will be a short educational presentation by members of the ATVA about art therapy with an opportunity for questions from the audience. Press releases will be sent to the local media and pictures will be posted on the appropriate web sites.
